In my opinion not all books to get you in the mood for Halloween need to be Horror (I personally stay away from this genre as I prefer to sleep at night!), sometimes a Thriller will do! So here are my Thriller suggestions:

Fifty Fifty by Steve Cavanagh
Description From Goodreads:
“Two sisters on trial for murder. Both accuse each other.
Who do YOU believe?
Alexandra Avellino has just found her father’s mutilated body, and needs the police right away. She believes her sister killed him, and that she is still in the house with a knife.
Sofia Avellino has just found her father’s mutilated body and needs the police right away. She believes her sister, Alexandra did it, and that she is still in the house, locked in the bathroom.
Both women are to go on trial at the same time. A joint trial in front of one jury.
But one of these women is lying. One of them is a murderer. Sitting in a jail cell, about to go on trial with her sister for murder, you might think that this is the last place she expected to be.
You’d be wrong.”
My review on Goodreads:
An excellent book, really well written. I thought I knew who the killer was but I was wrong. I liked the way that each character had a chapter which gave the reader an insight into what was happening for that character at the time.

Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
Description from Goodreads:
“Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: she must return to her tiny hometown to cover the unsolved murder of a preteen girl and the disappearance of another. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful thirteen-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family’s Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims—a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story—and survive this homecoming.”
My review on Goodreads:
This was a book that I had stored on my Kindle for a long time. I bought it purely because I enjoyed Gone Girl, but then sort of forgot about it. It was an emotional read and at times I wasn’t sure that I would be able to carry on, but the story and intrigue kept me going. The characters were well written and scarily believable. I kept changing my mind as to who the murderer was. Whilst it was certainly an experience to read I wouldn’t rush to read it again.
Rated 4/5

Sign of the Cross by Glenn Cooper
Description from Goodreads:
“Responding to an urgent summons from the Vatican, Harvard professor of religion and archaeology, Cal Donovan, flies to Italy to interview a young priest who has developed the stigmata of the crucifixion. Stunned to discover that the priest’s condition may be genuine, Cal determines to uncover the cause of the mysterious wounds.
But Cal is not the only one. When Giovanni is kidnapped from his church at dead of night, Cal comes to realize that the priest holds the key to an earth-shattering secret: a secret which a shadowy nationalist organization is desperate to control. Teaming up with Giovanni’s sister Irene, Cal must unravel the mystery and track down Giovanni in a perilous race against the clock … before an apocalyptic catastrophe is unleashed.”
My review on Goodreads:
I hadn’t read a Glenn Cooper book in a while so I decided to do a search at the library and found this book. I was not disappointed. It was well written and had me gripped from the beginning. There were a lot of historical references and myths blended into the story which I enjoyed. There was something happening all the time which kept my interest. Overall an exciting read that I would recommend.

The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley
Description from Goodreads:
“Everyone’s invited…everyone’s a suspect…
For fans of Ruth Ware and Tana French, a shivery, atmospheric, page-turning novel of psychological suspense in the tradition of Agatha Christie, in which a group of old college friends are snowed in at a hunting lodge . . . and murder and mayhem ensue.
All of them are friends. One of them is a killer.
During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of thirtysomething friends from Oxford meet to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students ten years ago. For this vacation, they’ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands—the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves.
They arrive on December 30th, just before a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world.
Two days later, on New Year’s Day, one of them is dead.
The trip began innocently enough: admiring the stunning if foreboding scenery, champagne in front of a crackling fire, and reminiscences about the past. But after a decade, the weight of secret resentments has grown too heavy for the group’s tenuous nostalgia to bear. Amid the boisterous revelry of New Year’s Eve, the cord holding them together snaps.
Now one of them is dead . . . and another of them did it.
Keep your friends close, the old adage goes. But just how close is too close?”
My review from Goodreads:
I saw this book around and waited ages for it to become available from the library. It didn’t disappoint. I really enjoyed the way that it was written. It was so different to anything I have read before. I loved the way that you didn’t even know who was murdered, let alone who the murderer was! I was gripped from the beginning and throughout the book was not only trying to work out who done it, but who it was done to! All the characters had shady pasts which made it that much harder! An excellent read that I would highly recommend.

The Guest List by Lucy Foley
Description From Goodreads:
“On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine, or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.
But perfection is for plans, and people are all too human. As the champagne is popped and the festivities begin, resentments and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes. The groomsmen begin the drinking game from their school days. The bridesmaid not-so-accidentally ruins her dress. The bride’s oldest (male) friend gives an uncomfortably caring toast.
And then someone turns up dead. Who didn’t wish the happy couple well? And perhaps more important, why?”
My review from Goodreads:
I absolutely loved this book! I couldn’t put it down. I loved the way it was written and how the reader doesn’t even know who has been murdered let alone who the murderer is! I also loved the setting. It really helped with the spooky atmosphere. Everything kept you guessing until the end which is what kept my interest. I can’t wait for the next book!
