šPLOT SUMMARY FROM GOODREADSš
YES
Jamie Goldberg is cool with volunteering for his local state senate candidateāas long as heās behind the scenes. When it comes to speaking to strangers (or, letās face it, speaking at all to almost anyone), Jamieās a choke artist. Thereās no way heād ever knock on doors to ask people for their votesā¦until he meets Maya.
NO
Maya Rehmanās having the worst Ramadan ever. Her best friend is too busy to hang out, her summer trip is canceled, and now her parents are separating. Why her mother thinks the solution to her problems is political canvassingāwith some awkward dude she hardly knowsāis beyond her.
MAYBE SO
Going door to door isnāt exactly glamorous, but maybe itās not the worst thing in the world. After all, the polls are getting closerāand so are Maya and Jamie. Mastering local activism is one thing. Navigating the cross-cultural romance of the century is another thing entirely.
šTHOUGHTSš
I initially came across this book when I was searching for books with ‘y’ in the title. I would like to be able to spell my name in books and was worrying about what I would read beginning with ‘y’. This book came up on the library app and I went for it. I have had an interest in Politics for a number of years and so it was nice to read a chick lit/romance with the backdrop of a political campaign.
I was gripped from the beginning. The style of writing was entertaining and light, whilst dealing with some pretty serious issues. The chapters were split between the two characters, with the next chapter beginning just slightly before the last one finished so there was a good flow to the book. It was really interesting to see the story from each of the main characters perspectives – male/female and Jewish/Muslim.Ā
I thought that the main characters were really sweet and you desperately wanted a happy ending for them both. It was full of will they, won’t they and you just had to keep reading to see what was going to happen next!Ā
Lastly the setting. It was really interesting to be set around a special election and especially to be seen from the point of view of people who are too young to vote, yet feel passionate enough about certain issues to want to help with the campaign. It wasn’t until the end of the book that I saw that the story was based on a real special election that took place. I think that added something to it, it made it more authentic.Ā
Overall I absolutely loved this book and if I ever have time to re-read books this will definitely be on my list! I highly recommend to readers who love YA, rom com or just want a light read.
