Welcome to Top 5 Wednesday! Hosted by Goodreads T5W group this week it is surprising reads. I am often taken in by the cover first before anything else, so it is always nice when it turns out to be a good book! I have had quite a successful month for good reads this month, but here are a few surprisingly good reads from this year and a couple from last year. Click on the titles for my reviews:
Book Review – The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

This book had mixed reviews and together with the subject matter, I wasn’t sure if I would like it. I decided that as it wasn’t an overly long book I could fit it in between my Blog Tour books. I am so glad that I did. I absolutely loved it!
Book Review – Yes, No, Maybe So by Becky Albertalli and Aisha Saeed

I chose this one purely because the title started with “y”. I had been struggling to find one so that I could spell my name in books, when this one came up. I had fairly low expectations, but actually it was a brilliant read and I am so glad that I found it.
Book Review – Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé

I was recommended this one from one of the Facebook Groups that I am in, but I was a bit sceptical at first as it is based in a school. I wasn’t sure if that was something I wanted to read about, but once I got started I was hooked. It was a gripping read from beginning to end and I am glad that I took up the recommendation!
Book Review – A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas

This is probably a surprising addition to this list, however the reason I put it on here was because I had read A Court of Thorns and Roses at the end of the previous year and whilst I really enjoyed it, I wasn’t in a hurry to read the rest of the series. It wasn’t until I saw it gaining traction on Instagram that I decided to read it. I am so glad that I did. I absolutely loved it and couldn’t wait to read the next ones in the series. After the last one it took me quite a while to get into my other books – I definitely had book hangover!
Book Review – Christmas at the Comfort Food Cafe by Debbie Johnson

I added this one to the list because it was actually good enough to be my book of the month in December. I will freely admit that I have lower expectations for Christmas books. I often think that they should have a separate star rating system because what I deem a 5 star Christmas book, I would never give it that if it was a “normal” book. Then I came across this and I loved it. It was certainly up there with all my other 5 star reads and it made me want to read other books by Debbie Johnson.

Christmas at the Comfort Food Cafe looks adorable. I’m always looking for festive books for December!

I felt the same way about ACOTAR! I wasn’t in a hurry to read the second book, but then I got hooked!

Strange isn’t it. Glad I’m not the only one. A Court of Mist and Fury was my favourite of them all.

I like to think of the first one as just a very long prequel!

A great idea! They are generally very long books, but they keep my interest! A Court of Thorns and Roses has a different feel to the others (in my opinion 🤣).

I enjoyed A Court of Mist and Fury much more than A Court of Thorn and Roses.
