Goodreads Top 5 Wednesday – Young Reads

Welcome to Top 5 Wednesday! Hosted by Goodreads T5W group this week it is Young Reads. Not necessarily books that got you into reading, but ones that left an impression. I have to admit that I found this particularly difficult, however I have gone through my Goodreads app (that has most of my books on it including childhood books!) and have picked out books that I enjoyed as a youngster that I haven’t necessarily mentioned before:

The Puffin Book of Utterly Brilliant Poetry by Brian Patten (click for link to Goodreads)

Book Description From Goodreads:

“An utterly brilliant collection of the very best poems, from Puffin Books,

A celebratory anthology of the best of Puffin poetry publishing, including poems by Roger McGough, Michael Rosen, Charles Causley, Benjamin Zephaniah, Jackie Kay, Spike Milligan, John Agard, Brian Patten, Allan Ahlberg and Kit Wright. Each poet’s work is illustrated by a different artist such as Emma Chichester Clark, Fritz Wegner and Korky Paul.

Brian Patten came to public attention with the publication of THE MERSEY SOUND in 1967. He is a very popular performance poet, always in demand for conferences and school visits. Collections of his own poetry are published in Puffin and he is the editor of the PUFFIN BOOK OF TWENTIETH CENTURY VERSE. Brian lives in London.

This collection features poems and illustrations from:

Spike Milligan; Kit Wright; Michael Rosen; Charles Causley; Roger McGough; Benjamin Zephaniah; Brian Patten; Jackie Kay; John Agard; Allan Ahlberg; Emma Chichester Clark; Korky Paul; Alison Jay; Lydia Monks; Ali Chatterton; David Mostyn; Sue Williams; Sheila Moxley; Fritz Wegner”

I am not overly into poetry, but this book has some amazing poems in that I really enjoyed as a child. And I loved the illustrations! I highly recommend this book.

The Witch Trade by Michael Malloy (click for link to Goodreads)

Book Description From Goodreads:

“Follow young Abby and Spike on their thrilling adventures through the fantastical world of THE WITCH TRADE. The evil Night Witches have invented a powerful new weapon and are threatening to take over the world — and only Abby and Spike can stop them! Joined by Captain Starlight (aka the Ancient Mariner), Abby and Spike must travel through perlious seas and wild lands to reach the dark lair of the Night Witches. Can their ragtag bunch defeat the evil Night Witch forces before it’s too late?”

I was quite into fantasy when I was younger and this cover caught my eye!

Charlie Bone and The Time Twister by Jenny Nimmo (click for link to Goodreads)

Book Description From Goodreads:

“Time is running out for Charlie Bone . . .

Charlies hopes that the new term at Bloor’s Academy will hold no nasty surprises. But then Henry Yewbeam appears, twisted through time from the icy winter of 1916.

With the scheming Yewbeam aunts on the prowl, and the Bloors out to catch him, Henry will need Charlie’s help just to stay alive. Bloor’s Academy can be a very dangerous place . .”

Again this follows my love of fantasy.

Karen’s Doll by Ann Martin (click for link to Goodreads)

Book Description From Goodreads:

“The bix mix-up

Karen has a new doll. And it’s not just any old doll. Karen’s baby doll came all the way from London, England. She was very expensive. Karen has to be extra careful with her.

When Karen’s best friend Nancy gets sick, Karen has a great idea. She gives her doll to Nancy until she feels better. But Nancy thinks the doll is for keeps! What will Karen do?”

This book made me want to get a special doll of my own.

The First Little Fairy and other Fairy stories (click for link to Goodreads)

I got this as a birthday present and loved it! Again fantasy…
