The book that I have chosen from my Goodreads list this week is:

The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley

Book Description From Goodreads:

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Guest List comes a new locked room mystery, set in a Paris apartment building in which every resident has something to hide…

Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. Her half-brother Ben didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. Only when she shows up – to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this? – he’s not there.

The longer Ben stays missing, the more Jess starts to dig into her brother’s situation, and the more questions she has. Ben’s neighbors are an eclectic bunch, and not particularly friendly. Jess may have come to Paris to escape her past, but it’s starting to look like it’s Ben’s future that’s in question.

The socialite – The nice guy – The alcoholic – The girl on the verge – The concierge

Everyone’s a neighbor. Everyone’s a suspect. And everyone knows something they’re not telling.”

I have wanted this book ever since I knew that Lucy Foley was writing a new mystery after The Guest List. It has finally been published and it is now sitting looking at me, waiting for me to read it!

The book that I have chosen from my Goodreads list this week is:

The Jane Austen Guide to Happily Ever After by Elizabeth Kantor

Book Description on Goodreads:

Have you stopped believing in happily ever after?

Women today are settling for less than we want when it comes to men, relationships, sex, and marriage. But we don’t have to, argues Elizabeth Kantor. Jane Austen can show us how to find the love we really want.

In The Jane Austen Guide to Happily Ever After, Kantor reveals how the examples of Jane Austen heroines such as Elizabeth Bennett, Elinor Dashwood, and Anne Elliot can help us navigate the modern-day minefields of dating, love, relationships, and sex. By following in their footsteps—and steering clear of the sad endings suffered by characters such as Maria Bertram and Charlotte Lucas—modern women can discover the path to lifelong love and true happiness.

Charged with honesty and humor, Kantor’s book includes testimonies from modern women, pop culture parallels, the author’s personal experiences and, of course, a thorough examination of Austen’s beloved novels.

Featuring characters and situations from all of Jane Austen’s books (including unfinished novels, and stories not published in her lifetime), The Jane Austen Guide to Happily Ever After tackles the dating and relationship dilemmas that we face today, and equips modern women to approach our love lives with fresh insights distilled from the novels:

Don’t be a tragic heroine

Pursue Elizabeth Bennet’s “rational happiness” —learn what it is, and how you can find it

Don’t let cynicism steal your happy ending

Why it’s a mistake to look for your “soul mate”

Jane Austen’s skeleton keys to a man’s potential

How you should deal with men who are “afraid of commitment” (from Jane Austen’s eight case studies)

Learn how to arrange your own marriage—by falling in love the Jane Austen way”

I saw this book on offer in Waterstones years ago and haven’t yet had a chance to read it! I love Jane Austen type stories so was drawn to it. Fingers crossed I get time this year!

The book that I have chosen from my Goodreads list this week is:

Lady Susan and Other Works by Jane Austen

Book Description From Goodreads:

“This collection brings together Jane Austen’s earliest experiments in the art of fiction and novels that she left incomplete at the time of her premature death in 1817. Her fragmentary juvenilia show Austen developing her own sense of narrative form whilst parodying popular kinds of fiction of her day. Lady Susan is a wickedly funny epistolary novel about a captivating but unscrupulous widow seeking to snare husbands for her daughter and herself. The Watsons explores themes of family relationships, the marriage market, and attitudes to rank, which became the hallmarks of her major novels. In Sanditon, Austen exercises her acute powers of social observation in the setting of a newly fashionable seaside resort. These novels are here joined by shorter fictions that survive in Austen’s manuscripts, including critically acclaimed works like CatharineLove and Freindship [sic], and The History of England.”

I enjoy reading Jane Austen and went through a stage of collecting her books and spin offs. This was one of those books. It has been sitting on my shelf for a long time, but hopefully one day soon I will get around to reading it!

The book that I have chosen from my Goodreads list this week is:

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl

Book Description From Goodreads:

Willy Wonka’s famous chocolate factory is opening at last!

But only five lucky children will be allowed inside. And the winners are: Augustus Gloop, an enormously fat boy whose hobby is eating; Veruca Salt, a spoiled-rotten brat whose parents are wrapped around her little finger; Violet Beauregarde, a dim-witted gum-chewer with the fastest jaws around; Mike Teavee, a toy pistol-toting gangster-in-training who is obsessed with television; and Charlie Bucket, Our Hero, a boy who is honest and kind, brave and true, and good and ready for the wildest time of his life!”

I have had this book for many years and never got round to reading it. I love the original film (the updated version not so much) and so I would love to see what the film was based on!

The book that I have chosen from my Goodreads list this week is:

Angelmaker by Nick Harkaway

Book Description From Goodreads:

“Joe Spork repairs clocks, a far cry from his late father, a flashy London gangster. But when Joe fixes one particularly unusual device, his life is suddenly upended. Joe’s client, Edie Banister, is more than just a kindly old lady–she’s a former superspy. And the device? It’s a 1950s doomsday machine. And having triggered it, Joe now faces the wrath of both the government and a diabolical South Asian dictator, Edie’s old arch-nemesis.”

I bought this book many years ago and started to read it. Life then got in the way and I have never gone back to it. I would like to make an effort to read it this year!

The book that I have chosen from my Goodreads list this week is:

Lost in a Book by Jennifer Donnelly

Book Description From Goodreads:

“An original addition to the beloved Beauty and the Beast fairy tale, Lost in a Book follows the lonely, bookish Belle as she finds an enchanted book in the Beast’s library called Nevermore that carries her into a glittering new world. There, Belle is befriended by a mysterious countess who offers her the life she’s always dreamed of.

But Nevermore is not what it seems, and the more time Belle spends there, the harder it is to leave. Good stories take hold of us and never let us go, and once Belle becomes lost in this book, she may never find her way out again.”

I got this book a couple of years ago and really want to make some time to read it this year!

The book that I have chosen from my Goodreads “to read” list this week is:

Yes No Maybe So by Becky Albertalli and Aisha Saeed

Book Description From Goodreads:

“Jamie Goldberg is cool with volunteering for his local state candidate – as long as he’s behind the scenes. There’s no way he’d ever knock on doors to ask people for their votes…until he meets Maya.

Maya Rehman’s having the worst Ramadan ever. Her best friend is too busy to hang out, her summer trip is cancelled, her parents are separating and now her mother thinks the solution to her problems is political canvassing – with some awkward guy she hardly knows …

Going door to door isn’t exactly glamorous, but maybe it’s not the worst thing in the world. After all, the polls are getting closer – and so are Maya and Jamie. Mastering local activism is one thing. Navigating the cross-cultural crush of the century is another thing entirely.”

I will be honest in that I came across this book when I was looking for a book that began with “y” in the title so that I could start to spell my name in books! After reading the blurb I was taken in and it has been waiting on my Goodreads to read list!

The book that I have chosen from my Goodreads “to read” list this week is:

The Austen Girls by Lucy Worsley

Book Description From Goodreads:

“By turns thrilling, dramatic and inspiring, this is the story of Jane Austen’s life as you’ve never heard it before.

It is 1809 and Fanny and Anna have just been launched on to the ruthless Regency marriage market by Fanny’s mother (think Mrs Bennet). But luckily their mysteriously wealthy Aunt Jane is there to guide them and help them make better choices – i.e. don’t get married at all!

Jane plays detective to help them rescue a falsely accused friend from being transported to Australia, while Anna impetuously makes and breaks an engagement. Fanny is forced to leave the marriage market when her mother dies and she has to look after ten siblings. She learns the secret of Jane’s wealth and self-possession (she is, of course, a writer) and decides to follow in her footsteps.”

I love anything Jane Austen and was quite intrigued when I saw this book. I am interested to see how this book integrates Jane Austen and her works. It is available at the library so hopefully next year I will get the chance to give it a read!

The book that I have chosen from my Goodreads “to read” list this week is:

On a night like this by Lindsey Kelk

Book Description From Goodreads:

“When Fran Cooper accepts a mysterious temporary job as a PA to a celebrity, she is swept off her feet overnight. Working with internationally famous singer Juliette, Fran is the person charged with getting Juliette to the Crystal Ball, the glittering event when the world’s rich and famous gather on Panarea, a beautiful Mediterranean island, for a night like no other.

What Fran doesn’t know is that on this one night, everything will change for her too – that instead of standing on the sidelines, she’ll be putting on the most beautiful dress she’s ever seen and having the most unforgettable night of her life…”

I have chosen this book because I had seen it around and than narrowly missed out on being on the Blog Tour for it. I have seen that there is a copy at the library so hopefully next year I will get the chance to read it!

The book that I have chosen from my Goodreads “to read” list this week is:

Still Life by Sarah Winman

Book Description From Goodreads:

By the bestselling, prize-winning author of When God was a Rabbit and Tin Man, Still Life is a beautiful, big-hearted, richly tapestried story of people brought together by love, war, art, flood… and the ghost of E.M. Forster.

We just need to know what the heart’s capable of, Evelyn.
And do you know what it’s capable of?
I do. Grace and fury.

It’s 1944 and in the ruined wine cellar of a Tuscan villa, as the Allied troops advance and bombs fall around them, two strangers meet and share an extraordinary evening together.

Ulysses Temper is a young British solider and one-time globe-maker, Evelyn Skinner is a sexagenarian art historian and possible spy. She has come to Italy to salvage paintings from the ruins and relive her memories of the time she encountered EM Forster and had her heart stolen by an Italian maid in a particular Florentine room with a view.

These two unlikely people find kindred spirits in each other and Evelyn’s talk of truth and beauty plants a seed in Ulysses mind that will shape the trajectory of his life – and of those who love him – for the next four decades.

Moving from the Tuscan Hills, to the smog of the East End and the piazzas of Florence, Still Life is a sweeping, mischievous, richly-peopled novel about beauty, love, family and fate.”

I have chosen this book because I recently saw it on the TV show Between the Covers and was taken in by everyone’s reviews of the book!
