Friday 56 – Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman

Welcome to Friday 56! Hosted by Freda’s Voice, you turn to page 56 or 56% in any book or reading device and pick a sentence that grabs you.

My Book of the Week is Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman (click for link to Goodreads):

Book Description From Goodreads:

“Neil Gaiman, long inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction, presents a bravura rendition of the Norse gods and their world from their origin though their upheaval in Ragnarok.

In Norse Mythology, Gaiman stays true to the myths in envisioning the major Norse pantheon: Odin, the highest of the high, wise, daring, and cunning; Thor, Odin’s son, incredibly strong yet not the wisest of gods; and Loki—son of a giant—blood brother to Odin and a trickster and unsurpassable manipulator.

Gaiman fashions these primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds and delves into the exploits of deities, dwarfs, and giants. Through Gaiman’s deft and witty prose, these gods emerge with their fiercely competitive natures, their susceptibility to being duped and to duping others, and their tendency to let passion ignite their actions, making these long-ago myths breathe pungent life again.”

FRIDAY 56 QUOTE:

“Loki went across the mountain to see the dwarf called Brokk, at the workshop he shared with his brother, Eitri. “Ivaldi’s sons are making three treasures as gifts for the gods of Asgard,” said Loki. “The gods are going to judge the treasures.  Ivaldi’s sons want me to tell you that they are certain you and your brother Eitri can’t make anything as good as they can. They called you “fumble-fingered incompetents’.””

I was lucky enough that page 56 was fairly near the beginning of the start of a new short story. It gives a good indication of how the mini stories contained in the book as a whole are written and, more specifically, what Loki is like as a character.

Monday Night Reading

I had an excellent amount of time for reading this evening and I think that I used it fairly well. I could have used it better, but I can’t help getting distracted by social media every time I swap to the next book…

I managed to finish reading and drafting a review for my library book, Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman. It will still be my book of the week and partake in this week’s memes. I then managed to read a good chunk of The Christie Affair by Nina De Gramont, so much so that I might be able to finish that off tomorrow (it depends on how late I get home from being out and about!). Lastly I managed to read 4 chapters of my Blog Tour book Double or Nothing by Kim Sherwood.

Whilst I have made good progress in all of those books, they haven’t been outstanding reads for me. We shall see how The Christie Affair ends and how Double or Nothing progresses.

I hope that you have had a good Monday. Tomorrow on the blog it’s my Blog Tour review for Quarter to Midnight by Karen Rose, Top Ten Tuesday and First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday!

My Book Of The Week – Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman

Welcome to my Book Of The Week post! Each week I will highlight one of the books that I am currently reading and use that book to participate in blog memes such as First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros, Thursday Quotables and Friday 56. Feel free to read along with me!

This week I have chosen Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman (click for link to Goodreads) published 7 February 2017.

Book Description From Goodreads:

“Neil Gaiman, long inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction, presents a bravura rendition of the Norse gods and their world from their origin though their upheaval in Ragnarok.

I wanted to try a different mythology book, and came across this one on my Library App Libby. It is good so far.

What else has been happening this week:

We have finally had cooler weather and some rain! It has been excellent! We have also had a pretty busy week, going out most days.

On Monday we went to the Children’s Centre then on to Hastings. It was my son’s 4th birthday so we thought that we would take him to the Seaside and to the Aquarium. He loved being in the Sea, but not the Aquarium so much, no idea why. On Tuesday we went to Rochester for some lunch, a look round the Cathedral and some window shopping (including a couple of bookshops!). Wednesday we went to Aylesford Priory and had a look around where the Order of Carmelites used to live. Thursday we went to Maidstone Museum. On Friday we went to Tunbridge Wells to buy some bits for my son’s first homework (!!). On Saturday we went to IKEA and bought some bits for the house – we always need more storage solutions! Today we are going to stay near home and visit my partner’s parents (who live a 10 min walk away!)

Friday Night Reading

Another short night – what an exciting life I lead to have such short evenings! This time we were out celebrating a 30th birthday.

After going through my blog and Instagram I have only read some of my library book, Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman. I am not sure about it. It is a series of short stories and some are a bit confusing, others are quite good.

I hope that you have had a good Friday. Tomorrow on the blog it’s Books that I have been seeing all over Instagram, Stacking the Shelves and Weekend Reading.

Thursday Night Reading

I have finally managed to have a reasonable amount of reading time this evening! I managed to read a bit of my library book, Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman, and I read a large chunk of my buddy read book The Christie Affair by Nina De Gramont.

I am not sure what to think about Norse Mythology. It was very confusing at first, but I am gradually getting into the individual stories even though the time scales seem a bit off.

My buddy read is also interesting. It is fairly good, but I find the change in perspectives a bit strange and it makes me question what I am reading.

I hope that you have had a good Thursday. Tomorrow it is my usual busy Friday with Friday 56, Book Blogger Hop, Let’s Talk Bookish and Friday Musings.

WWW Wednesday – Currently Reading, Finished Reading, Reading Next

It’s W W W Wednesday! Hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words, here are my 3 Ws (Currently Reading, Just Finished Reading and Future Reading):

What I am currently reading:

Quarter to Midnight by Karen Rose (click for link to Goodreads)

I am on the Blog Tour for this book on 23 August so keep your eyes peeled for my review on here, Amazon, Goodreads, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter!

Book Description From Goodreads:

“There are good cops. And there are bad cops. The question is…who wins? After completing her tours with the Marines in Iraq, Molly Sutton knew she could take down any bad guy she met. But when her law enforcement agency in North Carolina turned against her, she joined up with her former CO Burke Broussard, who left New Orleans PD to set up a private investigative service for people who couldn’t find justice elsewhere.Gabe Hebert saw the toll that working for the NOPD took on his dad and decided instead to make a name for himself as one of the best young chefs in the French Quarter. But when his father’s death is ruled a suicide after a deliberately botched investigation by his former captain, Gabe knows his dad stumbled onto a truth that someone wants silenced.Gabe goes to his father’s best friend, Burke, for help. Burke assigns the toughest member of his team, Molly, to the case. Molly can’t believe she’s being asked to work with the smoking hot chef whose chocolate cake is not the only thing that makes her mouth water. Sparks fly as they follow the leads Gabe’s dad left them, unraveling a web of crimes, corruption, and murder that runs all the way to the top.”

The Christie Affair by Nina De Gramont (click for link to Goodreads)

I am reading this as a buddy read with my sister and cousin. It is good so far.

Book Description From Goodreads:

Why would the world’s most famous mystery writer disappear for eleven days? What makes a woman desperate enough to destroy another woman’s marriage? How deeply can a person crave revenge?

In 1925, Miss Nan O’Dea infiltrated the wealthy, rarefied world of author Agatha Christie and her husband, Archie. In every way, she became a part of their life––first, both Christies. Then, just Archie. Soon, Nan became Archie’s mistress, luring him away from his devoted wife, desperate to marry him. Nan’s plot didn’t begin the day she met Archie and Agatha.

It began decades before, in Ireland, when Nan was a young girl. She and the man she loved were a star-crossed couple who were destined to be together––until the Great War, a pandemic, and shameful secrets tore them apart. Then acts of unspeakable cruelty kept them separated.

What drives someone to murder? What will someone do in the name of love? What kind of crime can someone never forgive? Nina de Gramont’s brilliant, unforgettable novel explores these questions and more.”

Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman (click for link to Goodreads)

This is my current library book.

Book Description From Goodreads:

What else has been happening this week:

It has been so hot again this week and in our area there are hosepipe bans. We have also been classed as being in a drought.

On Monday we were back at the local Children’s Centre. It was very hot, but manageable. My son actually did some finger painting which he has never shown much interest in before – something for the fridge! Tuesday we had dinner round my mum’s house, Wednesday we went out for a lovely lunch with my partner’s parents and brother for his mum’s birthday, Thursday was a chill day, Friday we went shopping for more school uniform for my son (heartbreaking!) and this weekend we are baking etc and generally getting ready for my son’s birthday party on Sunday. So a busy time!!

This weekend will be the first time that we check in on our Buddy Read thoughts on The Christie Affair by Nina De Gramont (click for link to Goodreads) which I am quite excited about. I am enjoying it so far, so we shall see what the others think of it!

Apart from the above this weekend’s reading will be heavily geared towards making a dent in my Blog Tour book Quarter To Midnight by Karen Rose (click for link to Goodreads). I am really enjoying it, but there is a lot to get through!

If I have time then I will make a start on my library book Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman (click for link to Goodreads). I would like to get this finished this month as it will add to my mythology retelling goal!
