Book Review – The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood

Available at the library – this is my own personal copy

📖PLOT SUMMARY FROM GOODREADS📖

As a third-year Ph.D. candidate, Olive Smith doesn’t believe in lasting romantic relationships–but her best friend does, and that’s what got her into this situation.

Convincing Anh that Olive is dating and well on her way to a happily ever after was always going to take more than hand-wavy Jedi mind tricks: Scientists require proof. So, like any self-respecting biologist, Olive panics and kisses the first man she sees. That man is none other than Adam Carlsen, a young hotshot professor–and well-known ass. Which is why Olive is positively floored when Stanford’s reigning lab tyrant agrees to keep her charade a secret and be her fake boyfriend. But when a big science conference goes haywire, putting Olive’s career on the Bunsen burner, Adam surprises her again with his unyielding support and even more unyielding… six-pack abs.

Suddenly their little experiment feels dangerously close to combustion. And Olive discovers that the only thing more complicated than a hypothesis on love is putting her own heart under the microscope.

💭THOUGHTS💭

I have been waiting a long time to read this book. It has been all over Instagram and has had such positive reviews. I saw that the library had copies, but the waiting list was quite vague and months were mentioned. I decided therefore that it would be quicker for me to ask for it as a Christmas present! I can honestly say that this book lives up to the hype. It will take an awful lot for this book not to be my book of the month.

The writing was clear and engaging. I really struggled to put it down. Every spare moment I had (and didn’t have!) I would pick up this book wanting to see what was going to happen next. It was full of mishaps and miscommunications which kept my interest throughout. I loved the humour that was added even though there were some serious issues that were highlighted in the book.

The chapters were fairly long and almost like a mini story all of their own. Each chapter opened with a hypothesis which was then ‘worked through’ throughout the chapter. I enjoyed that and couldn’t wait to see how the hypothesis was going to work out.

The main characters were excellent. I loved the fact that they were polar opposites and yet they just gelled together. It was so sweet and I really enjoyed reading about their journey.

I loved the setting of academia. It is not something I often read about so it was something different for me. I think that it gave the story a unique edge to it and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was also interesting to see that the author had experience of this environment and so that added some authenticity to the story (despite the ridiculous things that kept happening to the main characters!).

Overall I really loved this book and will certainly be recommending it to people. 5 star plus rating from me!

⭐Rated 5/5⭐
