What book should I read to my toddler? My toddler recommends…

No More Nappies by Campbell books

This week my son has not been as interested in his books. This is the first time ever and I am feeling a bit confused by it! As such I have decided to highlight this book.

We are currently trying to potty train him, so we have bought him a potty training book for all of us to read! He really enjoys the book – the potty training not so much.

It is a very interactive book with wheels to turn, tabs to pull and flaps to open. The pictures are bold and bright and at the bottom of each page there is a parent’s tip.

Whether it works or not only time will tell, but it is an entertaining book nonetheless!

Where’s Mr Duck? by Ingela P. Arrhenius

Book Description on Goodreads:

“Where’s Mr Duck?

This brilliant board book has easy-to-grasp, shaped felt flaps and instantly appealing artwork. The repetitive text makes it a joy to read aloud and share with toddlers.”

My son got this book quite a while ago, but it seems to have made a resurgence! He loves the flaps and has started to read along with me (vaguely!).

The words don’t rhyme, but there is a nice flow to the book. The illustrations are clear and bright and the flaps are made of felt so they are easy to use and are quite substantial if you are comparing them to paper flaps! This book is part of a set, but this week this one is the favourite!

Happy Reading!

What book should I read to my toddler? My toddler recommends…

My son got this as a Christmas present and he absolutely loves it! The book is more of a draw than the puzzle, but the musical puzzle piece is a close second.

This week he has been constantly coming up to me asking me to read the book (which contains the basic nursery rhyme, spot the difference and matching games). Whilst it is only a few pages, the pictures are bright and engaging and my son loves reading it over and over again. It is hard to read it as a book and not to start singing it as the nursery rhyme!

The Tallest House On The Street by Stephanie Moss and Leire Martin

Book Description From Goodreads:

“One day, Giraffe appears in her too-small moving van. She needed a new house and she had come here with a plan.

Giraffe has searched everywhere for her perfect home. Will anywhere be just right for her long neck? Find out in this tall tale about the wackiest house hunt in town.”

This book was bought by nanny because it had a giraffe on the front cover! My son took to it immediately. The story has a lovely rhyming flow to it and my son loves to read along with us. The illustrations are beautiful and really capture what the animals are feeling.

Spaghetti Hunters by Morag Hood

My toddler first came across this book on CBeebies Bedtime Stories. He absolutely loved it and so we decided to get him the book. He still loved it (we were a bit concerned because as we are not celebrities we may not be able to read the book to his satisfaction – we all know how fickle a toddler can be!) and reads the book along with us.

The story is amusing and the illustrations are great. There are some bigger words, but my toddler is getting there! It doesn’t rhyme but it has a lovely flow to it. A firm favourite in the household at the moment!

Toddler Book Recommendations!

What is my toddler reading now that he is 3? Well, he has loved books from an early age (very much encouraged by me!) and goes through phases of liking different books, however at this point in time here is his top 5!

Toddle Waddle by Julia Donaldson

Book Description From Goodreads:

“From the author of Room on the Broom, follow-the-leader has never been so much fun!  There’s a hullabaloo at the seaside when wobbly toddler takes a walk and is soon joined by a joyful troop of human and animal friends. They wander happily along with a clip clop, hurry scurry, flip flop, toddle waddle, but where will they go and who else will they meet along the way? Jaunty rhymes and bright, bold pictures ensure that even the youngest child will love this simple, playful story, a wonderful introduction to onomatopoeia.”

My son loves this one. It doesn’t have ‘proper’ words as such, it deals with sounds. It is a lovely rhyming book with great illustrations, however there isn’t much of a story.

Dear Santa by Rod Campbell

Book Description From Goodreads:

“A letter to Santa starts off on a merry chain of gift-wrapping, but nothing is quite right and each time he thinks better of his choice. Lift the flaps to unwrap each present and find out what Santa chooses as the perfect present in the end!”

My son is now old enough that he can be trusted with the flimsier flap and so he has been enjoying this book – despite it being out of season! He can now name the presents behind the flaps and wants me to read it to him over and over again!

Hippo Has A Hat by Julia Donaldson

“Lots of clothes! Let’s try them. Maybe we can buy them.

There is chaos in the clothes shop when the animals go on a glorious shopping spree. Zebra’s zipper is stuck and Toad’s tracksuit is far too big, but Flamingo finds a stylish bag, and Caterpillar’s shoes are really cool. There has never been a fashion show like it. Rhyming text is perfect for interactive play with young children and inspires them to play dress up.”

This is a family favourite with lovely rhyming words and brilliant illustrations. I enjoy reading this one with him and he can now tell me which animals are going to come up next.

That Not My Dinosaur by Usborne

Book Description From Goodreads:

“Meet five friendly dinosaurs in this special edition of the much-loved That’s Not My… book. Babies and toddlers will love touching the textured patches as they meet dinosaurs with fuzzy tails, bumpy teeth and soft spines.”

My son loves these touchy feely books and especially this dinosaur one!

The Tallest House On The Street

Book Description From Goodreads:

“One day, Giraffe appears in her too-small moving van. She needed a new house and she had come here with a plan.

Giraffe has searched everywhere for her perfect home. Will anywhere be just right for her long neck? Find out in this tall tale about the wackiest house hunt in town.”

This is a great rhyming book with lovely illustrations. I enjoy the story and it is a pleasure to read to my son.

I shall certainly make the most of all of these books before he grows out of them!

What are the best books for me to read to my toddler?

Daddy is my hero by Dawn Richards and Jane Massey, Goodnight Duggee Ladybird book and Poppy and Sam’s Easter Egg Hunt Usborne book

I thought that I would mix it up a bit and add a post about some of my son’s books. Whilst these are his personal copies they are all available at the library.

My son loves to read. I got him his first library card when he was a month old and we have continued to be regular visitors to the local library until the pandemic.

These three books are just some of his favourites! Daddy is my hero is a lovely rhyming book that we now all know off by heart, Goodnight Duggee is a Duggee short story based on The Sleeping Badge episode on TV and Poppy and Sam’s Easter Egg Hunt is a beautifully illustrated and sensory read. My son loves listening and engaging with these books and I enjoy reading them to him.
