Book of the Month – My Favourite Book Of October 2022

Book Review – The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling

Book Description From Goodreads:

“Nine years ago, Vivienne Jones nursed her broken heart like any young witch would: vodka, weepy music, bubble baths…and a curse on the horrible boyfriend. Sure, Vivi knows she shouldn’t use her magic this way, but with only an “orchard hayride” scented candle on hand, she isn’t worried it will cause him anything more than a bad hair day or two.

That is until Rhys Penhallow, descendent of the town’s ancestors, breaker of hearts, and annoyingly just as gorgeous as he always was, returns to Graves Glen, Georgia. What should be a quick trip to recharge the town’s ley lines and make an appearance at the annual fall festival turns disastrously wrong. With one calamity after another striking Rhys, Vivi realizes her silly little Ex Hex may not have been so harmless after all.

Suddenly, Graves Glen is under attack from murderous wind-up toys, a pissed off ghost, and a talking cat with some interesting things to say. Vivi and Rhys have to ignore their off the charts chemistry to work together to save the town and find a way to break the break-up curse before it’s too late.”

It was a very hard choice this month with Netgalley Book Review – Snowed In For Christmas by Sarah Morgan coming in a close second. There really was nothing in it – they were both excellent books!

Goodreads Monday (add your links in the comments section for all to see!) – The Once And Future Witches by Alix E Harrow

Welcome to the new home of Goodreads Monday! I have taken over the role of host from Lauren’s Page Turners who no longer blogs about books.

Goodreads Monday allows you to post about what books are on your “to read” lists, the progress you have made on your current books and reading challenge, and any other Goodreads news!

✨Don’t forget to add your link in the comments section so that we can all see each other’s posts!✨

The book that I have chosen this week is The Once And Future Witches by Alix E Harrow (click for link to Goodreads).

Book Description From Goodreads:

“In 1893, there’s no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box.

But when the Eastwood sisters–James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna–join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women’s movement into the witch’s movement. Stalked by shadows and sickness, hunted by forces who will not suffer a witch to vote-and perhaps not even to live-the sisters will need to delve into the oldest magics, draw new alliances, and heal the bond between them if they want to survive.

There’s no such thing as witches. But there will be.”

This was added to my list on 10 August 2021. I had seen this around social media and added it to my list. One day I will try to get a copy and read it over Halloween!

💭THOUGHTS💭

I wanted something short to read for this Halloween month and this Kindle Freebie (free at the time of purchase) jumped out at me. Whilst it took me longer to read than expected (due to other commitments) I ended up really enjoying the story.

The writing was light and descriptive. I really felt that I got to know the main character in a short space of time. For a short story a lot was packed in. It suddenly got quicker towards the end and all of a sudden the murderer was announced. It was a surprising twist that, whilst it felt quite sudden, looking back there was a bit of a build up that I didn’t realise had taken place at the time that I was reading it.

The chapters varied in length with the longer chapters at the beginning and the middle. It gave an interesting pace to the story. Whilst there seemed to be a big build up and back story, I wasn’t disappointed by the sudden solving of the murder. I knew that it had to come soon due to the number of pages left, but it was still a surprise! I think that the answer to the murder was so interesting that it took my mind off the speed of the solving.

I loved the characters and the relationships that they all had with one another. I enjoyed reading about the ups and downs in the family unit. It made it more relatable (as far as a magical story can be!).

Lastly the settings. I loved the small town and how everybody seemed to know everyone, yet still no one knew who the murderer could be.

Overall an enjoyable, short, cosy mystery. I recommend it if you just want a magical, one sitting book.

WWW Wednesday – Currently Reading, Finished Reading, Reading Next

It’s W W W Wednesday! Hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words, here are my 3 Ws (Currently Reading, Just Finished Reading and Future Reading):

What I am currently reading:

Fingersmith by Sarah Waters (click for link to Goodreads)

This is my current Gothic Fiction read from my own TBR shelf! The chances of me finishing this book and making my genre goal of Gothic Fiction this month are getting smaller by the day! It is quite a large book, with small writing and I have Blog Tour books that are taking priority.

Book Description From Goodreads:

“Sue Trinder is an orphan, left as an infant in the care of Mrs. Sucksby, a “baby farmer,” who raised her with unusual tenderness, as if Sue were her own. Mrs. Sucksby’s household, with its fussy babies calmed with doses of gin, also hosts a transient family of petty thieves—fingersmiths—for whom this house in the heart of a mean London slum is home.

One day, the most beloved thief of all arrives—Gentleman, an elegant con man, who carries with him an enticing proposition for Sue: If she wins a position as the maid to Maud Lilly, a naïve gentlewoman, and aids Gentleman in her seduction, then they will all share in Maud’s vast inheritance. Once the inheritance is secured, Maud will be disposed of—passed off as mad, and made to live out the rest of her days in a lunatic asylum.

With dreams of paying back the kindness of her adopted family, Sue agrees to the plan. Once in, however, Sue begins to pity her helpless mark and care for Maud Lilly in unexpected ways…But no one and nothing is as it seems in this Dickensian novel of thrills and reversals.”

Good Taste by Caroline Scott (click for link to Goodreads)

I am on the Blog Tour for this book on 21 October so keep your eyes peeled for my review on here, Amazon, Goodreads, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter!

Book Description From Goodreads:

You can tell a lot about a person from what they like to eat..

When Stella Douglas, author of a much-loved but not very successful biography of a forgotten cookery writer, is summoned to see her editor in London, she is dreading being told her writing career is over before it’s even started. But much to her surprise, she finds she is being commissioned to write another book – this time a history of food in England and how the English like to eat. It’s to be quintessentially English and will remind English housewives of the old ways, and English men the glory of their country. The only problem is – all English food is really from elsewhere.

So Stella sets about inviting recipes from all corners of England, in the hope of discovering a hidden culinary gem. But what she discovers is oatcakes and gravy and lots of lots of potatoes.

Longing for something more thrilling, she heads off to speak to the nation’s housewives. But when her car breaks down and the dashing and charismatic Freddie springs to her rescue, she is led in a very different direction…

Full of wit and life, Provenance is a story of discovery, of a modern England emerging from the past and one woman’s desire to make her own way as a modern woman.

Books that I have been seeing all over Instagram this week

Welcome to my All Over Instagram post! I am always interested in seeing what other people are reading, so each week I will highlight the book/s/ author/s that have been catching my attention on Instagram.

Colleen Hoover once again seems to be the most popular author with a few different books of hers being around. The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling (click for link to Goodreads) is the most popular book.

Book Description From Goodreads:

“Welcome to Spooky Season!! The follow-up to Erin Sterling’s New York Times bestselling hit The Ex Hex features fan favorite Gwyn and the spine-tinglingly handsome Wells Penhallow as they battle a new band of witches and their own magical chemistry.

Gwyn Jones is perfectly happy with her life in Graves Glen. She, her mom, and her cousin have formed a new and powerful coven; she’s running a successful witchcraft shop, Something Wicked; and she’s started mentoring some of the younger witches in town. As Halloween approaches, there’s only one problem—Llewellyn “Wells” Penhallow.

Wells has come to Graves Glen to re-establish his family’s connection to the town they founded as well as to make a new life for himself after years of being the dutiful son in Wales. When he opens up a shop of his own, Penhallow’s, just across the street from Something Wicked, he quickly learns he’s gotten more than he bargained for in going up against Gwyn.

When their professional competition leads to a very personal—and very hot—kiss, both Wells and Gwyn are determined to stay away from each other, convinced the kiss was just a magical fluke. But when a mysterious new coven of witches come to town and Gwyn’s powers begin fading, she and Wells must work together to figure out just what these new witches want and how to restore Gwyn’s magic before it’s too late.”

Thursday Quotables – The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling

Hosted by Bookshelf Fantasies, this is where you share a favorite quote, line, or passage from your reading each week!

Each week I chose a Book of the Week to take part in this (and other) book memes. This week my chosen book is The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling (click for link to Goodreads):

“Have you brought me out here to murder me?” he called. “Because that probably would solve your problems, but I have to say, I object on both moral and personal grounds.”

The Ex Hex had everything that I could want from a Halloween book including humour. I think that this quote demonstrates the sort of humour that was in the book.

Would you want to read this book based on that quote?

First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros – The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling

It’s First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday! Hosted by Socrates Book Reviews this is where you share the first paragraph of one of the books that you are currently reading. Each week I will choose a book of the week (which will be one of the books that I am currently reading) and that book will take part in this book blog meme:

This week my book of the week is The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling (click for link to Goodreads) published 28 September 2021.

“Never mix Vodka and witchcraft.

Vivi knew that. Not only had her Aunt Elaine said it about a thousand times, but it was also printed on dishtowels and T-Shirts and, ironically, shot glasses in Something Wicked, the store Aunt Elaine ran in downtown Graves Glen, Georgia.”

I love this opening. It is light, humorous and gives me hope for the rest of the book!

What do you think about this quote?

💭THOUGHTS💭

I had seen this book around last year, and when I saw that it was written by Rachel Hawkins under a different name I had even higher hopes after enjoying her book, Reckless Girls. I was quite excited when I saw that this book was on offer a couple of weeks ago and knew that I had to get it to make my Halloween complete.

The writing was light and entertaining, with the odd bit of humour thrown in. I kept wanting to read more and looked forward to picking it up each day. The only downside was the unnecessary swearing in it. At one point I was thinking of giving it 4 stars, but I got so taken in by the story that the unnecessary swearing didn’t seem that much of a big deal any more.

The chapters were fairly short and had a cute illustration of a cat and a candle over the chapter number. The story had an excellent pace to it and there was always something going on. I was gripped and kept wondering what else was going to happen. I did enjoy the suspense of will the curse be lifted and will they live happily ever after?

Whilst the majority of the POV was from the main character Vivi, there were little moments when it switched to Rhys. There were just random moments, but you always knew when it was a change of POV. It wasn’t very long, but you got the gist of what was going on with Rhys. I have come to appreciate dual perspectives, I think that it adds something extra to the story.

The characters were excellent. I loved the main characters’ humour and relationship. I also loved the family relationship that Vivi had with her Aunt and Cousin and I enjoyed reading about Rhys and his family.

Lastly the settings. I loved the Halloween village, the shop, Vivi’s place of work and the description of (one of) Rhys family home, basically everything! There was enough description to give you a good idea of where you were without overpowering what the characters were up to.

Overall I loved this book and highly recommend it if you want a Halloween Rom Com.

Monday Night Reading

Tonight I have had a wonderfully long reading evening, however I am about to cut it short by going to sleep. It does annoy me that when I finally get a good long evening I am so tired that I waste it sleeping.

Anyway, this evening I have finished The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling. I wasn’t expecting to finish it quite this early, but I was enjoying it and in addition to this evening, I also devoted my day time reading slot to it. I have drafted a review for it so that is ready to be finalised tomorrow. I am not sure when I will actually post it though.

I spent the rest of the evening reading my Netgalley EARC Snowed in for Christmas by Sarah Morgan and a chapter of Good Taste by Caroline Scott. I am enjoying both and look forward to picking them both up again tomorrow.

I hope that you have had a good Monday. Tomorrow on the Blog it’s Top Ten Tuesday and First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday. This week’s Top Ten Tuesday was a tough one so I’ve had to think outside the box a little bit…

See you then!
