📖PLOT SUMMARY FROM GOODREADS📖
Grab your jacket and head outside with twins Finlay and Leo as they complete their chores and work up an appetite for a savory farm-fresh treat.
Based on the author’s homesteading adventures, this book is sure to be a hit with nature-loving (and curious!) kids who are keen to learn about basic sustainable living practices.
Readers follow siblings Finlay and Leo on a journey to collect colorful eggs, check on the pigs in the silvopasture, and find the tallest grasses where the cows wait to be milked.
At home, the twins carefully collect vegetables from the garden. Mama’s two helpers are ready to enjoy the rewards of their hard work . . . a hearty shepherd’s pie!
With playful, warmly-colored illustrations, this “farm-to-table” themed book is sure to become a favorite with young kids who love farms, animals, environmental themes, and learning to prepare and share fresh food with family.
💭THOUGHTS💭
I wanted to read a slightly different children’s book, something that had a factual base to it. I was pleased when I was approved by Netgalley for this book about the origins of some of our food. I think that it is important that children learn where their food comes from and this book is an excellent introduction to that.
The story took a couple of simple, yet nutritious, meals and guided us around the farm telling us where parts of the meal came from.
The writing was clear and simple with a few more difficult words thrown in. It was informative without being overbearing or too complicated.
The font was simple with the occasional change when illustrating sounds. The text was black and part of the illustrations in the book. This therefore meant that the background to the text was different depending on which page you were reading.
The amount of text differed on each page. There were blocks of text in random places on the page. Despite this it was still fairly easy to follow.
The sounds in the book were written in a different font and a different colour, and were again randomly put on the page. This added extra interest.
The illustrations were bold and eyecatching. There were lots of little details that meant that each time you looked at the page you found something different.
Overall a fun, informative book to read.
