Library Book Review – The Secret Life of an Uncool Mum by Serena Terry

Genre: Contemporary/Humour

Number of Pages: 352

📖PLOT SUMMARY FROM GOODREADS📖

From the creator of viral Tiktok sensation, Mammy Banter, comes a hilarious warts-and-all novel about modern motherhood – and how having it all sometimes isn’t what you think it might be.

She used to want it all.

Now she just wants a nap.

Tara Gallagher is knackered. She used to dream of being BeyoncĂ© but suddenly she’s thirty-six – with three kids, a loving husband, a very boring job – and instead of headlining Coachella, she’s in her pyjamas on a Friday night, watching cheesy TV.

It’s time for a mommy makeover. She’s going to show her teenage daughter she’s still cool. She’s going to show her husband she’s still an absolute ride. She’s going to show her colleagues she’s still a Boss Bish.

But most of all, she’s going to prove to herself that she can still be a mom, still work full time, and still be Beyoncé

The debut novel from viral TikTok star, Mammy Banter.

💭 THOUGHTS 💭

I wanted to read something with Mum in the title around Mother’s Day. Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to read it over the Mother’s Day period, but I finally found some time and completed it! It was quite hard to find something with Mum in the title that interested me, but this onendefinitely ticked the enjoyable box!

The writing was frank and honest. I liked how ‘real’ it was, taking issues that a lot of people are dealing with and turning it into something entertaining and hopeful. I also enjoyed the inclusion of Derry Irish words. It added an extra layer to the story and helped to give an accent to the main character.

The chapters were a mix of lengths which gave a good flow to the book. I was able to sit and read it for a long time without my attention wandering.

Each of the chapters had amusing titles and it was interesting to see how the chapter would relate back to the title. At the end of the story was an epilogue, which I always appreciate, plus a dictionary so you could see what the Derry Irish words meant.

The main character was great. She was relatable and I really felt for her. In some ways it’s sad that it was relatable, but also nice to know that you were not alone. I did feel uplifted by the end.

The supporting characters were great at emphasising certain points in the main character’s life and altogether it made for an emotional read.

Lastly the settings. These were only lightly described as it was a character focused story. The settings that were described were done so to better illustrate what was happening to the main  character at that moment in time.

Overall a relatable, hopeful story.
