20 Books of Summer Challenge #20booksofsummer24

As you know I like to try and be fairly casual in my reading. I do the Goodreads Challenge (I put down a fairly low number based on past reading) and I set myself genre goals each month that I may or may not achieve. My one downfall that can disrupt the casual nature of my reading is the number of Blog Tours that I do each month. I do love taking part in them! This has meant that my own books have taken a back seat. When I saw this challenge being spoken about on The Chocolate Lady’s Book Review Blog I knew that this was my chance to try and sort out my TBR!

So without further ado here is my post to declare that I will be taking part in 20 Books of Summer hosted by Cathy @ 746 Books. This challenge will take place between 1 June – 1 September.

Keep your eyes peeled for everyone’s 20 Books of Summer Reviews #20booksofsummer24

I have started off low and put myself down for 10 books:

The Last Devil To Die by Richard Osman

Before The Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi

The Bodyguard by Katherine Center

The Department of Rare Books and Special Collections by Eva Jurczyk

Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead by Elle Cosimano

The World According To Kaleb by Kaleb Cooper

The Scarecrow and his Servant by Philip Pullman

The Firework Maker’s Daughter by Philip Pullman

A Caribbean Mystery by Agatha Christie

Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie

Hopefully I will get these read!

The book that I have chosen this week is Somewhere Beyond The Sea by T J Klune

Book Description From Goodreads:

“A magical house. A secret past. A summons that could change everything.

Arthur Parnassus lives a good life built on the ashes of a bad one. He’s the master of a strange orphanage on a distant and peculiar island, and he hopes to soon be the adoptive father to the six dangerous and magical children who live there.

Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago. He is not alone: joining him is the love of his life, Linus Baker, a former caseworker in the Department In Charge of Magical Youth. And there’s the island’s sprite, Zoe Chapelwhite, and her girlfriend, Mayor Helen Webb. Together, they will do anything to protect the children. But when Arthur is summoned to make a public statement about his dark past, he finds himself at the helm of a fight for the future that his family, and all magical people, deserve. And when a new magical child hopes to join them on their island home—one who finds power in calling himself monster, a name that Arthur worked so hard to protect his children from—Arthur knows they’re at a breaking point: their family will either grow stronger than ever or fall apart.

Welcome back to Marsyas Island. This is Arthur’s story.

Somewhere Beyond the Sea is a story of resistance, lovingly told, about the daunting experience of fighting for the life you want to live and doing the work to keep it.”

I loved The House in the Cerulean Sea so I am very much looking forward to reading this when it comes out in September!

As the gang springs into action they encounter art forgers, online fraudsters and drug dealers, as well as heartache close to home.

With the body count rising, the package still missing and trouble firmly on their tail, has their luck finally run out? And who will be the last devil to die?”

I have had this book on my list since I finished reading the last one! I love this series and have high hopes for this book (which I got for Christmas).

The book that I have chosen this week is Midnight at the Christmas Bookshop by Jenny Colgan.

Book Description From Goodreads:

“Carmen is at a loose end. Her gorgeous bookshop is the filming site of a cheesy Christmas movie, she’s been ousted from her sister’s house, and the love of her life has just flown thousands of miles away. It’s threatening to be a very unjolly Christmas indeed!

But when the elderly owner of the shop comes to Carmen with a Christmas wish that threatens to never come true, Carmen knows she must buckle down to get the funds to save not only his trip, but the shop itself.

While fending off a shady tatt-selling businessman, Carmen discovers wonders to the shop she could have never imagined, and opens a labyrinth of bookish backrooms for the customers to get lost in.

With her deadline looming, it might take more than a fresh coat of paint to solve Carmen’s problems. But with the help of their neighbours, her nieces and nephew, and a very distractingly cute male nanny, Carmen might just pull her greatest magic trick yet…”

This was one of my new books I got for Christmas. I am hoping to make a start on it soon! I enjoyed the first one so I have high hopes for this one.

The book that I have chosen this week is

Ghosts by the show’s creators

Book Description From Goodreads:

“The comic companion to the BBC sitcom GHOSTS.

Everybody leaves a trace. The ghosts of Button House may have been dead a long time – some of them a very long time – but they have all left their mark on the world (even if, in Robin’s case, that mark is just a handprint on the wall of a cave).

Gathered together in this volume is a treasure trove of unearthed cuttings, original records and rare artefacts that explore the unseen lives of those who died at Button House: from Thomas’s love letters to Pat’s ‘Summer Camp Rap’, and from Julian’s campaign promises to Lady Button’s Rules of Etiquette. There are even documents dictated to the one person who can see and hear the ghosts: Alison Cooper.

Written by the show’s creators – Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond – this eclectic archive is a unique chance to discover more about the beloved ghosts of Button House. Thank be to Moonah!”

The book that I have chosen this week is Deception by Gaslight by Kate Belli

Book Description From Goodreads:

“Glittering Gilded-Age New York holds its lavish charms–and a litany of deadly sins–as intrepid reporter Genevieve Stewart uncovers a trail of corruption and murder.

As a chill sets in on New York City in the winter of 1888, a jewel thief dubbed the “Robin Hood of the Lower East Side” has been stealing from the city’s wealthiest and giving to the poor. Genevieve Stewart–a young woman whose family is part of Mrs. Astor’s famed 400 but who has forged a life of her own as a reporter–decides to chase the story, but gets more than she bargained for: a murder victim sprawled in a dark alley in the dangerous Five Points neighborhood.

A handsome neighborhood tough comes to her rescue–but when she encounters the same man at a glamorous ball a few nights later, she realizes he’s society scion Daniel McCaffrey. Could this be her Robin Hood?

When two more murders rock the Knickerbocker world, it becomes apparent that something much more sinister is afoot than a few stolen diamond necklaces. Genevieve is determined to prove that Daniel is Robin Hood–but she’s loath to believe he is a killer as well.

From the glittering lights of Fifth Avenue to the sordid back alleys of Five Points, the truth is just one murder away.”

This is another Historical Fiction that I liked the look of. I hope to build up a little list to one day make my way through!

The book that I have chosen this week is The Animals at Lockwood Manor by Jane Healey (click for link to Goodreads).

Book Description From Goodreads:

“Some secrets are unspoken. Others are unspeakable . . .

August 1939.

Thirty-year-old Hetty Cartwright is tasked with the evacuation and safekeeping of the natural history museum’s collection of mammals. Once she and her exhibits arrive at Lockwood Manor, however, where they are to stay for the duration of the war, Hetty soon realizes that she’s taken on more than she’d bargained for.

Protecting her charges from the irascible Lord Lockwood and resentful servants is work enough, but when some of the animals go missing, and worse, Hetty begins to suspect someone – or something – is stalking her through the darkened corridors of the house.

As the disasters mount, Hetty finds herself falling under the spell of Lucy, Lord Lockwood’s beautiful but clearly haunted daughter. But why is Lucy so traumatized? Does she know something she’s not telling? And is there any truth to local rumours of ghosts and curses?

Part love story, part mystery, The Animals at Lockwood Manor by Jane Healey is a gripping and atmospheric tale of family madness, long-buried secrets and hidden desires.”

This was the first book that I added to my Want To Read list on Goodreads – back in October 2020. I still think it sounds interesting 3 years on. One day I might get the chance to read it…

The book that I have chosen this week is Murder Most Fab by Julian Clary (click for link to Goodreads).

Book Description From Goodreads:

“Hello, I’m Johnny Debonair and this is my book – “Murder Most Fab”. Buy it. You won’t regret it. Everything that has happened so publicly is explained. Of course, I’d prefer it if you remember me as I was at my height, before the past caught up with me so spectacularly – TV’s Mr Friday Night with an enviable lifestyle and the nation at my feet. My fame might have looked easy to you at the time, but getting to the top of the celebrity ladder is hard work. It took talent, beauty, commitment and, uniquely in my case, a number of unfortunate deaths. If we were being picky you might describe me as a serial killer, but I really don’t see myself that way. It sounds trite to say ‘one thing led to another’ but it’s true.As you’ll discover I owe something of my rise and my fall to three my mother, an eccentric country girl who taught me exhibitionism by hanging naked from the clocktower of Hythe town hall; Catherine, my best friend, then partner in business – a devil in red heels, who, in her clear Essex accent, taught me how to ‘look after number one’; and Timothy, who broke my heart and caused me to seek refuge in sex, money and celebrity. But in the end you have to take responsibility for your own actions. No one was forcing me, were they? I hope you, the public, can forgive me and enjoy this sordid tale for what it is – my final entertainment for you.”

I was searching for something a bit different to read this month and came across this. I have put it on my Goodreads list so that I remember it for when I have finished my current books!

The book that I have chosen this week is Pride and Protest by Nikki Payne (click for link to Goodreads).

Book Description From Goodreads:

“Liza B–The Only DJ That Gives a Jam—wants to take her neighborhood back from the soulless property developer dropping unaffordable condos on every street corner in DC. But her planned protest at their corporate event takes a turn after she mistakes the smoldering hot CEO for the waitstaff. When they go toe-to-toe, the sparks fly—but her impossible-to-ignore family thwarts her every move. Liza wants Dorsey Fitzgerald out of her hood, but she’ll settle for getting him out of her head.

At first, Dorsey writes Liza Bennett off as an over-caffeinated woke weekend warrior. As the adopted Filipino son of a wealthy white family, he’s always felt a bit out of place, and knows a fraud when he sees one. But when Liza’s protest results in a viral meme, their lives are turned upside down and Dorsey comes to realize this irresistible revolutionist is the most real woman he’s ever met.”

I saw this back in July last year and had to add it to my list. Anything with a hint of Pride and Prejudice and I am there!

The book that I have chosen this week is Jacob T. Marley by R. William Bennett (click for link to Goodreads).

Book Description From Goodreads:

“”Marley was dead to begin with . . .”
These chillingly familiar words begin the classic Christmas tale of remorse and redemption in A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Now R. William Bennett rewinds the story and focuses the spotlight on Scrooge’s miserly business partner, Jacob T. Marley, who was allowed to return as a ghost to warn Scrooge away from his ill-fated path. Why was Marley allowed to return? And why hadn’t he been given the same chance as Ebenezer Scrooge?

Or had he?

Written with a voice reminiscent of Dickens, Jacob T. Marley is a masterfully crafted story sure to become a Christmas favorite.”

This was added to my Goodreads Want To Read List on 15 December 2020. I enjoy the story of A Christmas Carol and this sounds like an interesting take on one of the characters that we don’t really get to see much of.
