Goodreads Monday (add your links in the comments section for all to see!) – 4:50 From Paddington by Agatha Christie

Welcome to the new home of Goodreads Monday! I have taken over the role of host from Lauren’s Page Turners who no longer blogs about books.

Goodreads Monday allows you to post about what books are on your “to read” lists, the progress you have made on your current books and reading challenge, and any other Goodreads news!

✨Don’t forget to add your link in the comments section so that we can all see each other’s posts!✨

The book that I have chosen this week is 4:50 From Paddington by Agatha Christie (click for link to Goodreads)

Book Description From Goodreads:

“For an instant the two trains ran together, side by side. In that frozen moment, Elspeth witnessed a murder. Helplessly, she stared out of her carriage window as a man remorselessly tightened his grip around a woman’s throat. The body crumpled. Then the other train drew away.

But who, apart from Miss Marple, would take her story seriously? After all, there were no suspects, no other witnesses… and no corpse.”

I wanted to start an Agatha Christie collection and this is one of the books that I bought. I just need to find the time to read it!

Have you read it? What did you think?

What else has been happening this week:

We started off the week going to the Children’s Centre with my mum. We then went to the library on Tuesday and then didn’t do anything exciting until Friday when we went to The Romney Rythe and Dymchurch Railway. The weekend has been quiet as I haven’t been well again. Luckily it isn’t Covid so that’s something!

Hope you have all had a great week. Here’s to next week!

My book:

Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins (click for link to Goodreads)

Book Description From Goodreads:

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Wife Upstairs comes a deliciously wicked gothic suspense, set on an isolated Pacific island with a dark history, for fans of Lucy Foley and Ruth Ware.

When Lux McAllister and her boyfriend, Nico, are hired to sail two women to a remote island in the South Pacific, it seems like the opportunity of a lifetime. Stuck in a dead-end job in Hawaii, and longing to travel the world after a family tragedy, Lux is eager to climb on board The Susannah and set out on an adventure. She’s also quick to bond with their passengers, college best friends Brittany and Amma. The two women say they want to travel off the beaten path. But like Lux, they may have other reasons to be seeking an escape.

Shimmering on the horizon after days at sea, Meroe Island is every bit the paradise the foursome expects, despite a mysterious history of shipwrecks, cannibalism, and even rumors of murder. But what they don’t expect is to discover another boat already anchored off Meroe’s sandy beaches. The owners of the Azure Sky, Jake and Eliza, are a true golden couple: gorgeous, laidback, and if their sleek catamaran and well-stocked bar are any indication, rich. Now a party of six, the new friends settle in to experience life on an exotic island, and the serenity of being completely off the grid. Lux hasn’t felt like she truly belonged anywhere in years, yet here on Meroe, with these fellow free spirits, she finally has a sense of peace.

But with the arrival of a skeevy stranger sailing alone in pursuit of a darker kind of good time, the balance of the group is disrupted. Soon, cracks begin to emerge: it seems that Brittany and Amma haven’t been completely honest with Lux about their pasts––and perhaps not even with each other. And though Jake and Eliza seem like the perfect pair, the rocky history of their relationship begins to resurface, and their reasons for sailing to Meroe might not be as innocent as they first appeared.

When it becomes clear that the group is even more cut off from civilization than they initially thought, it starts to feel like the island itself is closing in on them. And when one person goes missing, and another turns up dead, Lux begins to wonder if any of them are going to make it off the island alive.”

Friday Musings – Inspired by Friday Favourites – Books That Should be a Film/TV Show By Now

Welcome to my first Friday Musings Post! This is where every week I will scour the Blogosphere and find past meme questions and incorporate them into a current post (linking back to the blog who set the meme).

Today I have chosen Geeky Galaxy Friday Favourites. On 19 March 2021 the prompt was Books That Should be a Film/TV Show By Now.

I have read so many books that deserve to be made into a film. Here are just 5:

Book Review – Chasing the Darkness by Cassie Sanchez

Book Review – The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

Book Review – The Maid by Nita Prose

Book Review – The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell

Book Review – Before Again by Claire S Duffy

Let’s Talk Bookish – Book to Film Adaptations

Welcome to my Let’s Talk Bookish post! Created by Rukky @ Eternity Books and hosted by Aria @ Book Nook Bits, this meme includes a set prompt which we are then let lose on to discuss.

This week’s prompt is:

Book to Film Adaptations

What are your favourite book to film adaptations?

I love Harry Potter, Bridget Jones Diary, Twilight, the list could go on! I will say though that the books are far superior to the films except with Bridget Jones Diary. In this very rare case I actually prefer the film to the book!

What are your least favourite ones?

Despite Harry Potter being my favourite, the later films fall into this category. The books get longer, so there isn’t the time to get everything in and the bits that did go in didn’t quite live up to my expectations.

Do you think that books translate better to films or shows?

I would have to say shows as there is more time for things to be explored and improved upon. One example of this is the first season of Bridgerton. I loved the Netflix version of the book. I read the book afterwards and was actually quite disappointed by it (however I read the second book after the first and absolutely loved it and when season 2 came out that actually let me down!).

The reason behind shows generally being better in my opinion is that films have time constraints and therefore have to lose bits, whereas a show can be broken up and have longer episodes with which to explore everything that happens in the book.

Would you rather see a standalone or a book series adapted?

I don’t have a preference. A series means that there are films to look forward to in the future, but if a standalone is done well then I am ok with that!

What do you think is important for a successful book to film adaptation?

As not everything can be included in the film, it needs to at least be hinted at in the film, even if it is only brief. When something is completely left out I notice it and it gets on my nerves!

What about you?

Book Blogger Hop – What is your reading preference – fiction or nonfiction?

Welcome to the Book Blogger Hop! Hosted by Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer this week the prompt is:

What is your reading preference – fiction or nonfiction?

For me I will always say fiction. I haven’t yet read anything non fiction that has inspired me to read more. As you know I set myself genre goals each month to try and broaden my reading. I have set a non fiction goal in the past, but it didn’t go very well and I haven’t gone back to it since. Maybe a goal for next month?

What about you?

Friday 56 – Quote from You Had Me At Halloumi by Ginger Jones

Welcome to Friday 56! Hosted by Freda’s Voice, you turn to page 56 or 56% in any book or reading device and pick a sentence that grabs you.

My Book of the Week is You Had Me At Halloumi by Ginger Jones (click for link to Goodreads)

“You are allowed to be happy. Your mum would want you to be happy. You deserve to be happy.”

This is a part of the book when the main character, Freya, is thinking about her mum who is in a home because of her schizophrenia. Freya has come away to Cyprus to do this competition and she feels guilty about her mum. This quote is Freya thinking about what her school teacher would say to her.

I am currently 71% though this book and am really enjoying the sights and food of Cyprus!

Thursday Quotables – You Had Me At Halloumi by Ginger Jones

Hosted by Bookshelf Fantasies, this is where you share a favorite quote, line, or passage from your reading each week!

Each week I chose a Book of the Week to take part in this (and other) book memes. This week my chosen book is You Had Me At Halloumi by Ginger Jones (click for link to Goodreads):

“It’s the sort of balmy evening unimaginable on a cold, dark night back home in Nottingham. The sun dips behind the mountains and a breeze teases the branches of the lemon trees lining the promenade. Freya feels a whole lot better on dry land, her mouth watering at the smell of grilled octopus mixed with citrus sea spray.”

I tried to find a quote that combined both Cyprus and the cooking aspect of the story and came up with this. This book is wonderfully descriptive and I’m really enjoying reading about the food and the people!

Book Description From Goodreads:

When it comes to love, its feta late than never . . .

Freya Butterly has always dreamed of being a Head Chef but despite running every service at the Mediterranean restaurant, she still doesn’t get the recognition she deserves. Craving adventure and a real taste of the Mediterranean, Freya takes matters into her own hands, ditching both her job and unsupportive boyfriend, she packs her bags for sunny Cyprus in pursuit of the prestigious Golden Spoon culinary award.

As one of the seven competitors, Freya is determined to clinch the trophy and rediscover her passion for food, but what she doesn’t expect to discover is Xanthos. As gorgeous as he is charming – he’s quite the dish. Freya is instantly attracted to him, but this trip was about Cypriot cuisine, not cypriot sausage (ahem, romance) and she knows she must not let Xanthos distract her from the competition.

But if she walks away, will Freya spend the rest of her life wondering What If?
