Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday! Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, this week it is Unlikable Characters You Can’t Help but Love (These are villains, criminals, jerks, etc. that make you fall in love with them anyway, perhaps because they evolve by the end or they’re secretly wonderful and have been all along.) I found this quite hard, but finally managed to get a list of 10 (click titles for links to my reviews)!
Book Review – Chasing the Darkness by Cassie Sanchez – Azrael
Bad guy turned “good”.
Book Review – The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling – Rhys Penhallow
Hurt the main character’s feelings.
Random Things Tours – Book Review – What Child Is This? By Bonnie Macbird – Sherlock Holmes
Thinks that he is above everyone, but he uses his skills and knowledge to help people.
Random Things Tours – Book Review – Last Time We Met by Emily Houghton – Fin
Disappears from the other main character’s life without a word.
Book Review – Distant Stars by Kassandra Garrison – Will Rutledge
Does bad things in order to get by.
Random Things Blog Tour – Book Review – The Rabbit Factor by Antti Tuomainen – Henri Koskinen
Not a people person, but does his best for the employees that he has inherited from his brother.
Book Review – It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey – Piper
Quite self absorbed.
A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas – Rhysand
Portrayed as the bad guy until it is all explained in this book.
Fairest of All by Serena Valentino – The Wicked Queen
An interesting take on the Wicked Queen – you get to see another side to her.
The Beast Within by Serena Valentino – The Beast
The well known transformation to beast and then back again!
What characters are on your list?

The whole series was interesting. It wasn’t the best book of the series, but I enjoyed the take on her!

I still don’t think Piper has completely won me over.

No, she got better, but there is still a way to go!

I haven’t read any of these Emily, but Rhysand has been a popular choice today. Love how you put all of these together!

He has! I recommend ACOTAR. Thank you ☺️ yours was brilliant!

Rhysand never completely won me over I have to admit, obviously he wasn’t as bad as we were lead to believe in ACOTAR, but I almost felt like ACOMAF went too far the other way if that makes sense? Like we were supposed to think he was this perfect guy and forget about all the bad things he did.

I know what you mean. It was a complete turn around and one that I wasn’t expecting! I have many confused emotions over it 🤣

I have only read one of these books, but I like your reasoning for the characters you chose.

Thank you. I did struggle a bit – I didn’t want to give too much away 🤣

I agree, we want to entice, not spoil.

Exactly! I had to rewrite bits several times, hence the very short explanations!

Totally agree on Piper. I was never able to get over how much her character rubbed me the wrong way, but I’m hoping she gets better at the end of the book. I ended up setting the book aside halfway through earlier this year.

She does get a bit better, but she has a long way to go. Hook, Line and Sinker is better as it is about her sister Hannah 🤣

The Ex Hex sounds like one I’d enjoy.

I’m unfamiliar with any of these characters, but it seems like a great list.

That’s ok. Same – I need to read more of those books.

Love It Happened One Summer as an example. It was so interesting to me that Piper had so many unlikeable traits, but was so likeable herself!

I’ve heard mixed things about The Ex Hex, but I still want to read it, it looks cute.
Piper from It Happened One Summer, was pretty unlikeable. But the guy (I can’t remember his name), the love interest was also kind of unlikable. Dismissive and judgemental at first, he grew on me though.

It’s just a light, entertaining read. Nothing too serious. Just the sort of thing I needed.
Very true. I preferred him though 😂

😊 Fairest is an average book. An interesting take on the Queen though.

I’m weird, I liked Piper, Rhysand, and Rhys from the start. I must like unlikeable characters lol.

Piper is a great choice – I didn’t like her at first, but she grew on me 🙂 Rhysand made my list too. The Ex Hex is on my TBR.

Thank you. Yes, she was a proper dislikeable character!! I really enjoyed the Ex Hex ☺️

I love a good, complex villain. It’s always interesting to see what makes them act the way they do. Even if it doesn’t make them likable or redeemable at least it humanizes them a little, you know?
Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

Although I hadn’t read any of the books on your list (Sorry!) they do sound intriguing. I also like how you mentioned why you thought they were bad.

No need to apologise. I have rarely read what other people post about 😊 thank you. It was hard to make sure that I didn’t give anything away so it ended up being quite brief!

I rarely if ever sympathize with a villain character so creating any kind of list like that is always difficult. But sometimes it’s fun to challenge your bookish mind, too. 🙂 Thanks so very much for visiting my list on this week, Emily. Apologies I didn’t visit here before now.
